Description
This photograph depicts an arched entrance to the archaeological site of Caesarea Maritima in Israel. This very impressive site of ruins dates back to Herod the Great who built this port city during c. 22–10 BC. A number of biblical and historical figures are associated with the ancient city including Roman procurator Antonius Felix, prefect Pontius Pilatus, the Apostles Paul and Peter. It became an important city for the first 600 years of Christianity. In 1961 a jaw opening discovery was made: The Pilate Stone, which mentions Prefect Pontius Pilate who was the one that ordered the crucifixion of Jesus. For those interested,I have a few other photographs of Caesarea Maritima in my Israel gallery, and plan to add several more. Take a walk to the past!
