Description
The White Synagogue stands on the archaeological site of Capernaum in Israel. It is one of the oldest synagogue sites in the world and dates back to the 4th Century. It gets its name from the white stones that were used to build most of the structure. The stones were quarried some distance from the area and most of the other structures on the site were made of local basalt. Several times in the gospels the synagogue of Capernaum is mentioned as Jesus taught in the synagogue ( earlier synagogue ) and healed a man who was possessed by an unclean spirit (Luke 4:31–36 and Mark 1:21–28). Archaeological excavations have revealed that The White Synagogue was built on top of the foundation of the synagogue in the gospels, and the very place where Jesus himself taught!
