Description
Caesarea, an impressive archaeological site in Israel sits on The Mediterranean Sea and was a significant city in antiquity. King Herod the Great changed the name to Caesarea in honor of the Roman emperor Augustus. Among other things he constructed a city of that had a hippodrome, temples, palaces, amphitheater, and a major port often that was often referred to as Caesarea Maritima . The city was an important place during the first century church and for some time afterwards. Although it was a roman garrison port it became the place where the Apostle Peter preached Jesus to the gentles which resulted in Cornelius, a Roman Centurion, and a large gathering at his house receiving the Holy Spirit and being baptized as believers. The city was also the place where Paul was imprisoned for two years before he sailed to Rome to be tried there. Pontius Pilate, Roman prefect (governor) of Judaea (26-36 ce) presided at the trial of Jesus and gave the order for his crucifixion. His name appears in Latin on a 2'x3' (82 cm x 65 cm) limestone inscription found in 1961 at Caesarea Maritima that links him to the reign of the Emperor Tiberius. Caesarea was the capital of the Judean Province, thus the official headquarters and home of all prefects.
