Description
Ein Gedi is truly an oasis in the wilderness! It means " Spring of the kid " and is one of the most popular sites for tourists in Israel. The elevation of the land ranges from the level of the Dead Sea, the lowest place on earth, to the plateau of the Judean Desert at 200 meters above sea level. Ein Gedi is mentioned by name a number of times in the Bible; my favorite reference is about David fleeing from Saul and dwelling in the strongholds at Ein Gedi(1 Sam 23:29). In one of the caves David cuts off the corner of Saul's robe (1 Sam 24: 4). Ein Gedi became a nature reserve in Israel in 1971 and has two main spring-fed streams with flowing water year-round....Nahal David and Nahal Arugot. This photograph was taken on my descent from the largest waterfall. You can see the streams of water flowing and in the distance one can view the Ein Gedi Field School overlook ( distant tree on ridge ) and the Dead Sea. Ein Gedi Field School is the home base for The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel's (SPNI) campaigns to protect the Dead Sea, Ein Gedi, and the Judean Desert.
