Description
It's hard to believe that you could be in the Judean wilderness one minute, and suddenly you are in an oasis. Such is the case with Ein Gedi! Ein Gedi (Hebrew: עֵין גֶּדִי), literally means "spring of the kid (young goat)".One can view the Dead Sea from the reserve when you ascend the mountainous terrain. The elevation of the land ranges from the level of the Dead Sea, the lowest place on earth, to the plateau of the Judean Desert at 200 meters above sea level. Ein Gedi is mentioned by name a number of times in the Bible; however, my favorite reference is about David fleeing from Saul and dwelling in the strongholds at En Gedi(1 Sam 23:29). In one of the caves David cuts off the corner of Saul's robe (1 Sam 24: 4). You can see the many caves in the area and wonder in which ones did David hide. Ein Gedi became a nature reserve in Israel in 1971 and has two main spring-fed streams with flowing water year-round....Nahal David and Nahal Arugot, and two other springs which flow into the reserve. In Hebrew culture, the term "living waters" described pure, flowing water untouched by human hands: hence, the title "Living Waters of Ein Gedi". This photograph was taken at the David Waterfall which is the waterfall at the top of one of the hiking trails.
