Description
Enjoy viewing this mandarin duck that is hanging out in the shade. This photograph was taken during Spring when blossoms and birds were plentiful at Montreat, North Carolina. This is but one of several mandarin ducks that were on Susan Lake the day I was there. Mandarin ducks are perching birds that originate in East Asia. They are closely related to the North American wood duck. The males are filled with colorful feathers but " the male undergoes a moult after the mating season into eclipse plumage. When in eclipse plumage, the male looks similar to the female, but can be told apart by their bright yellow-orange beak, lack of any crest, and a less-pronounced eye-stripe." ( Source: Wikipedia ). This duck was hanging out by himself in the shade, perhaps waiting to mate as most of the other ducks in the lake were male. I like this photograph primarily because of the perspective and the water reflections.
