Description
For a thoroughly Jewish experience when in Israel Mahane Yehuda Market in Jerusalem is the place to go! "The Shuk", as it is often referred, is a happening place and much more than a marketplace. I found it an intriguing microcosm of Israeli life as many locals and tourists go there to shop or eat out. Watching the people communicate with one another or just be in their aloneness was an education. The marketplace, which has its origins in the 1800s, is partially covered and has more than 250 vendors who sell fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, fish, meat, cheeses, nuts, seeds, spices, cooking oils, wines and liquors; clothing and shoes; housewares, textiles, and Judaica. On Thursdays and Fridays, it is especially filled with shoppers who are stocking up for Shabbat. In recent times, The Shuk has become a center for nightlife with restaurants, bars, and live music. This photograph represents only one section of this very large complex.
