Description
This photograph depicts Crusader walls and moat that served as a fortification against a growing Muslim threat in Caesarea (Maritima), Israel. Because of this threat, Louis IX, King of France, restored and fortified Caesarea in 1251-52. A 4 m.-thick wall, some 1.6 km. long, surrounded the city, which covered an area of about 40 acres. It was also protected by a glacis (artificial slope ), towers and a 10 m.-deep and 15 m.-wide moat.
