Description
I took this photograph in Fort Mill, South Carolina a week or so before the arrival of Spring. It is very uncharacteristic of this area to experience snow at this time of year and this peach orchard is in danger of surviving. The Palmetto State actually grows more peaches than Georgia,The Peach State. It ranks second in peach production in the United States, with California being the top producer. The peach became South Carolina's official state fruit in 1984. The state grows over 30 different kinds of peaches and has been producing peaches commercially since the 1860s. The peach industry is indeed an important part of the state's overall agricultural production. The peach is indigenous to Northwest China and peach blossoms are highly valued in Chinese culture. They look very much like cherry, plum, and apricot blossoms. Thankfully the snow melted very quickly and hopefully the peaches will come forth in their time!
