Description
By looking at this photograph it is hard to believe that Ein Gedi is an oasis in the wilderness! It means " Spring of the kid " and is one of the most popular sites for tourists in Israel. The elevation of the land ranges from the level of the Dead Sea, the lowest place on earth, to the plateau of the Judean Desert at 200 meters above sea level. Ein Gedi is mentioned by name a number of times in the Bible; my favorite reference is about David fleeing from King Saul and dwelling in the strongholds at Ein Gedi(1 Sam 23:29). In one of the caves David cuts off the corner of Saul's robe (1 Sam 24: 4). Ein Gedi became a nature reserve in Israel in 1971 and has two main spring-fed streams with flowing water year-round....Nahal David and Nahal Arugot. I have read in a few places that the mountain is referred to as Mount Ishai. The sun going down over it is beautiful!
