Description
This photograph of bee and flowers was taken at Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens in Belmont, North Carolina.
Asteraceae, or the aster family, represents the largest vascular plant family in the world. There are a number of different genera within this family, including the Aster genus. Within the Aster genus, there are around 200 species. Some asters fall into other genera outside of Aster, such as Eucephalus or Oclemena. Asters share the common trait of producing blooms comprised of several ray flowers surrounding central disk flowers, which give the illusion of a single bloom. Asters are popular in gardens because of their bright colors and ease of growth. Source: http://www.ehow.com/list_7549133_types-aster-flowers.html
I especially enjoy lavender/ purple flowers and the contrast of the yellow/orange center on these asters really makes them pop! Obviously the bee likes them as well! I think these flowers are called Purple New England aster blooms, and the following gives you a brief description.
Aster novi-angliae grows natively in the eastern and central states. It prefers full sun conditions but can grow in partial shade. Soil must be well-drained in order for it to grow to its maximum potential. At maturity, the New England aster reaches between 3 and 6 feet tall. It blooms in late summer through early fall, producing flowers ranging from light pink to dark purple.
