Description
I had never really thought about how individualized horse shoeing really is. As I read some online explanations this is what I came up with (wiikipedia and others). Every horse's hoof horn will grow at a different pace. The individual growing rate depends on a lot of factors: feed, amount of minerals the horse gets, how the horse is used, the hoof horn quality, age, sex, and breed, Also, consideration should be given to whether or not the horse needs an orthopedic hoofshoe to correct hoof imbalances, In general it takes about 6 - 8 weeks on average until it will be necessary to re-shoe. By then hoof horn has grown at such a pace, that a hoof shoe does not fit the way it should. It starts to loosen, or parts of the hoof wall underneath can break, leaving spaces between shoe and the hoof.
