Description
The mimosa tree is sometimes referred to as the Persian silk tree. It is a legume and can help enrich the soil where it grows. Legumes come from the family Leguminosae, and a trait all legumes share is that they grow in a type of pod. The mimosa has flowers that are anywhere from pale to deep pink and form in clusters that look like fine silk threads. They form long pods that are 5-7 inches long and enclose the seeds. At night the leaves fold up which is why it is also known as the sleeping tree. These exotic trees are native to eastern and southwestern Asia, but they thrive in most climates in the United States. They are especially popular as a landscape tree in Florida for many years now because of their fragrant pink flowers and feathery, fern-like foliage. Their beautiful delicate flowers bloom from late April to early July. This photograph was taken in Ma'agan, Israel.
