Description
In 1697 Dutch explorer, Willem de Vlamingh discovered black swans in Austrailia. Up until that time it was thought all swans were white. As you can tell from the photograph their feathers are black in color with a line of white flight feathers on the edges of their wings. What you cannot see is the underlying white feathers that are used for flying. Wish I could haved captured an image of one in flight! The bill is bright red with a pale bar and tip. Their eyes are also red. The black swan is approximately 3.5 to 4.5 feet in length, and has a wing span of 5.2 to 6 feet. They are found in the wetlands, and are nomadic birds with no set migratory pattern. They feed on aquatic plants and graze on grass when on land. This beautiful water bird mates for life. The black swan is the state bird for Western Ausrailia and appears on the state flag and coat of arms. This photograph was taken in a pond in Kiev, Ukraine.
