Description
This magnificent view of the Judean Desert is seen from the Northern end of Masada, an ancient fortress and palace and one of Israel's most impressive archaeological sites. The remains of King Herod's palaces are among the rich ancient finds on this plateau. The most famous story, however, is connected with a large group of Jewish Zealots who took this fortress from the Romans, and lived on top of this plateau for several years; however, as the story goes, the Zealots ending up taking their own lives or killing one another to avoid defeat from their oppressors, the Romans. The archaeological discovery of one of the Roman encampments can be seen on the left side of the photograph. While the Judean Desert is small compared to other deserts it remains quite unique as just to the east is the lowest place on earth, the Dead Sea. Most people travel through the desert on their descent from Jerusalem, and many tourists come from all over the world to this area experience Biblical history, adventure, and The Dead Sea.
