Description
These doors are the entrance way into the historical Gemiluth Chessed (gift of the righteous) Synagogue which was built in 1892 in Port Gibson, Mississippi. I never thought about Jews having a historical presence in Mississippi until my Mississippi friend took me to this synagogue. This Moorish Revival Style Synagogue is the oldest surviving synagogue in Mississippi and the only building of this architectural style. The marker outside the building states that the style is a combination of Moorish, Byzantine, and Romanesque architecture. The town's Jewish community was established in the 1840s by Ashkenazi immigrants from the German states and Alsace-Lorraine. As the overall population shifted away from the river towns to the larger cities in the late1900s , the Jewish community also began to dwindle. The synagogue closed in 1986.
