Description
This historical house is in Cades Cove which is located in The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The house presently sits very close to the Cable Mill (grist) which is still operating and selling quality wheat flour and corn meal. The Cove began to become sparsely populated in the early 1800s and by 1850 it reached 685. John Cable moved to the cove in the 1860's and built the cove's grist and sawmill. He sold an acre of land, to Leason Gregg who built a house on the purchased land in 1879. The house was originally built on the Forge Creek Road location in the cove and moved from its original site to the Cable mill site years later. The Gregg-Cable house is the first full frame house built in the cove. It served the as a store downstairs and the Gregg family used the upstairs as living quarters.
In 1887 the house was purchased by John Cable's children who continued to operate the store and about 8 years later converted the house to a boarding house. It was moved to its present site after John Cable's daughter, Becky died in 1940.
