Description
This three story structure was constructed between 1833 and 1840. John Lawrence, was the initial architect, but was replaced by William Nichols in 1836 who completed the project. In 1903 a new State Capitol was completed and the Old Capitol remained vacant until 1916 when it was renovated and used for state office space. In 1961 it was renovated again to become The State Historical Museum. The old state capitol was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969., and 1n 1990 it became a National Historical Landmark. It is quite an impressive building architecturally and holds many of Mississippi's historical treasures.
