Description
This photograph depicts a piece of the Judean Desert at sunset and the road leading to Jerusalem. During Bible times people who travelled the Jericho- Jerusalem Road would do so at their own risk as there were often bandit gangs that preyed upon travelers. The story of The Good Samaritan that Jesus taught is based in the reality of what travelers risked every time they made a decision to journey the Jerusalem-Jericho road. Jesus himself traveled this road on his way to Jerusalem ( Mark 10:46-11:1 ).
According to the American Bible Society website Jericho is northeast of Jerusalem, but travelers go "down to Jericho. " The first-century road was approximately eighteen miles long, and a traveler going to Jericho from Jerusalem would descend from twenty-five hundred feet above sea level, to some eight hundred twenty-five feet below sea level. "Travelers, merchants, pilgrims, and soldiers have for centuries gone down to go up (traveling north to Jericho) and gone up to go down (traveling south to Jerusalem)."
This road has had strategic importance dating back to Old Testament times to include the account (2 Sam 15.23,16.14) "of David and his followers who escaped Jerusalem along this route after David's son Absalom had declared himself king."

The Judean Desert has an unique beauty, especially in light of all the rich history that it holds.
