Description
Olives trees have been around for thousands of years and the olive tree is even referenced in the flood story in the eighth chapter of Genesis. Verse 11 states " The dove came to him toward evening, and behold, in her beak, was a freshly picked olive leaf. So Noah knew that the water was abated from the earth. " Olives trees and the oil from their fruit are important in the biblical scriptures. This photograph was taken in the Garden of Gethsemane ( literally "Oil press ") in Jerusalem. It is my understanding that the trees in the garden are among the world's oldest olive trees, dating back to 900 years old. However, "the Gethsemane olives are possibly descendants of one that was in the garden at the time of Christ. This is because when an olive tree is cut down, shoots will come back from the roots to create a new tree.In 1982 the University of California carried out radiocarbon-dating tests on some root material from Gethsemane. The results indicated that some of the wood could be dated at 2300 years old." http://www.seetheholyland.net/gethsemane/ It is my understanding that oil is still pressed from the eight trees in the garden and used for special religious purposes.
