Description
An "Out of Africa" experience can be had at Asheboro Zoo in North Carolina. The "Watani Grasslands" mimic the great savanna of Africa and are home to a herd of African Elephants. Here, the elephants are free to roam around a large area which is shared with a few other animals like rhinos and gazelles. Elephants are large social and intelligent mammals. They express themselves and communicate to one another in a variety of sounds. "From powerful roars to low-frequency rumbles, elephants use a variety of vocalizations to communicate. Their sounds also include snorts, barks, grunts, trumpets, cries, and even imitated sounds. These calls are essential cues for the survival of an elephant family."
