Description
This photo was taken on Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina during Autumn. Grandfather mountain is the highest peak in the Blue Ridge Range. It is a place of diverse beauty and amazing vistas. The berries in the foreground are called mountain ash berries. "Mountain-ash is a beautiful but small tree with autumn-developing fruit. The tree is most often seen in the eastern United States at elevations over 3000 feet. The berries are eaten by birds and the foliage, twigs and fragrant inner bark is a favorite moose browse. The scientific name is Sorbus Americana." (About.com Forestry)
It is my understanding that The Mountain Ash Tree "provides three seasons of color. In spring it is laden with compact clusters of white flowers which will yield berries that turn bright red in September. By October, the large, dark green, pinnate leaves of this small tree will turn shades of yellow and orange, which with the berries are one of the brightest displays in the forest. Mountain Ash grows on rock outcrops, balds, and margins of the spruce-fir forest at high elevations." (Source: grandfather.com)
