Description
The breathtaking views of The Sea of Galilee and surrounding areas from Mount Arbel, where this photograph was taken, is one of my favorite spots in Israel. The Sea is actually a landlocked lake and is located in the northeast section of The Gailee.
A lot of history occurred in this area, but the most important is the ministry of Jesus of Nazareth. Most of his recorded miracles were performed in The Galilee area and He would have walked the valley below (Valley of The Doves ) that runs between Mount Arbel and Mount Nitai, the mountain across from it. It is also very easy to believe that Jesus would have journeyed up this mountain even though there is no mention of it in The Gospels.
The Sea of Galilee during the times of Jesus is thought to have been much larger than it is now. it is the lowest freshwater lake on Earth and the second-lowest lake overall (after the Dead Sea, a saltwater lake). The Jordan River which flows through it from north to south is the main source for its water, but it is also fed by underground springs.
Today tourism plays a large part in the economy of the area as Christian pilgrims come to The Galilee to experience the lake itself and to visit sites where Jesus preached and performed miracles. Others enjoy the beaches around the lake with fishing, boating and swimming.
