Description
This photograph was taken from the area of the Mount of Beatitudes during my trip to Israel. Most of Jesus' ministry took place around the Sea of Galilee and the Bible records that Capernaum, a town on the coast of the Sea, became his home after he left Nazareth which is also in the Galilee area. It is actually a lake which is fed primarily by the Jordan river which flows from Mount Hermon.
According to Wikipedia, "It is approximately 53 km in circumference, about 21 km long, and 13 km wide. The lake has a total area of 166.7 km at its fullest, and a maximum depth of approximately 43 m. At levels between 215 metres and 209 metres below sea level, it is the lowest freshwater lake on Earth and the second-lowest lake overall." My experiences, both on and around this body of water were absolutely wonderful! I took a ride on a boat much like the one in photograph and the serenity was beyond words. One's imagination could easily see how one could obey Jesus and " walk on the water " under such beautiful conditions, but when the winds kick up it can look like a real sea! Peter, who began to walk on the water, lost his faith to do so when he took his eyes off Jesus and began to look at those ferocious waves. That's when he started to sink. The amazing thing is that Jesus pulled him up even though Peter's dip in faith caused him to begin to sink....and Jesus is continuing to pull up many who lose faith because of fear! ( Note: The Sea of Galilee is also known as Kinneret, Lake of Gennesaret, Lake Tiberias )
