Description
This lovely photograph was taken in the Orchid Conservatory at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden in Belmont, North Carolina. I personally like the tropical look, and hope the viewer enjoy it as well. It would make a lovely framed piece. " This orchid is frequently referred to as a "Phal" or a "Moth Orchid." They are popular and easy to grow. Happy Phals can continue to bloom for months. They can be grown under fluorescent lights. Many come in whites, pinks, purples, yellows, and reds.
Grow them in bright shade like African Violets. Phals quickly burn in direct sun, but they do not want to be in the dark. Light should be bright enough to easily read a book.
Give them regular water, warm temperatures, and regular fertilizer. Never water Phals with cold water. Do not let water remain on the leaves at night, or they may rot.
Give slightly less water and fertilizer in winter.
Repot every 2-3 years.
Phalaenopsis Family
Phalaenopsis can be crossbred with closely related orchids to create hybrids. Hybrid plants combine the best qualities of both parents, and some can survive poor growing conditions or neglect. This "hybrid durability" makes them great choices for beginning orchid growers. Most Phalaenopsis sold today have been hybridized with other types of Phalaenopsis, which helps make them tough plants. Phalaenopsis hybrids with other orchids include:
ArachnopsisArachnis x Phalaenopsis, abbreviated Arnps.BeardaraAscocentrum x Doritis x Phalaenopsis, abbreviated Bdra.DoritaenopsisDoritis x Phalaenopsis, abbreviated Dtps.MoiraraPhalaenopsis x Renanthera x Vanda, abbreviated Moir.RenanthopsisPhalaenopsis x Renanthera, abbreviated Rnthps."
