Description
The barn owl, also referred to as barnyard owl, has no ear tuffs and a heart- shaped face. They are known to nest in barn lofts and church steeples. This particular owl is a resident at the Carolina Raptor Center in Charlotte, N.C.. These birds are one of the most wide-spread of all land birds. They are found on all continents except Antarctica. Owls are raptors which means they are birds of prey. The barn owl feeds on small rodents, baby rabbits, bats, frogs, lizards, birds and insects. The bird is primarily nocturnal, however, it may be viewed in flight in daylight hours, usually at dusk or dawn.
